Now this is living different

Just do it.

(Just Kidding, please don't) Without realizing it, I discovered some lessons about life while watching these talented Jamaicans at Rick's Cafe in Negril last week.

Now, I'm definitely not telling you to hang from a cliff with some of your friends, swinging yourself from a 60 ft tree over-looking the carribbean sea. But, these dare devils are clearly not afraid of anything. Cliff jumping must be one of the scariest things that come to my mind.

As, I was watching these crazy local Jamaican guys jump from these trees over looking the sea, the following thoughts were racing through my mind:
  1. "Who in the world were they listening to that encouraged them to do this?"
  2. "Where are their mothers?"
  3. "Where did this courage come from?"
  4. "Are they on drugs?"
  5. "Please don't fall!"
I decided there are two options for why these men got the courage to do this: 1) They are on drugs, OR.. 2) They were brought up with parents or other influences in their life that instilled in them that you can do anything you put your mind to.

This cliff diving, I imagine is one of the scariest and most dangerous things in life. But don't you agree that it must feel absolutely amazing after you dive in, realize that you didn't break anything and are standing back up on solid ground? The things in life that seem tough and make you want to give up, always end up being your proudest moments: 'Wow, I accomplished that and I'm still standing."

As I mentioned in earlier posts my - fear in life - is public speaking; I decided back in September to face my fears and join a program that basically revolves around public speaking (Public Relations). I often wonder why I didn't just take the easy path and join an art program, but then what type of person would I be if I didn't challenge myself?

I kind of viewed the experience of cliff diving as an extreme way of looking at life. There are those that dive in and take risks and those that sit back and watch them. So, challenge yourself, face your fears and don't look back.

The day that I visited Rick's Cafe in Negril, it was windy, darker out and the waves were thunderous. But, here is a video on a clear day where you can check out what these local Jamaican Dare Devils at Rick's Cafe in Negril, Jamaica: Cliff Jumping at Rick's Cafe

  1. I would do that in a second. Just don't think of it and jump. It is probably a thrill of a life time

  2. I definitely think that constantly pushing your boundaries is a good idea. However, I'm not sure pushing my boundaries would include cliff jumping though!

  3. I have experienced the exhilaration of cliff jumping before and for sure it was one of the most terrifying things I have ever done. My friends and I would do this when we were kids while were camping. It obviously wasn't as extreme as your Jamaican friends, but I jumped off a cliff. Facing your fears are good, but knowing your limits is also necessary. Face your fears Kristen and as you said, you'll be a better person for it.

  6. I absolutely wouldn't jump off a cliff. I have a huge fear of heights. Actually, no, I have a fear of falling from those heights and hurting myself! But I do agree that doing things that scare you leads to the greatest feelings of accomplishment and confidence.

  7. I have had the pleasure of partaking in a little cliff-diving myself. Can I tell you, it's absolutely exhilarating. The hardest part is doing your first jump, but once you experience that rush, you want to do it over and over again. Having the courage to overcome that initial fear, you feel as if you can conquer anything. I highly suggest doing it at one point in your life (safely) and you will look back on it and say "Wow! I actually did that!"
